Hanjin celebrates 10 year anniversary in Osaka Container terminal
Hanjin Shipping celebrated its 10 year anniversary for its Osaka container terminal.
In attendance at the Osaka Hyatt Regency Hotel ceremoney March 8th were Choi Won-pyo, senior vice president, Mr. Yanakihara, chief director of the Osaka Terminal Authority, and Mr. Takamori, chairman of Tasumi Shokai among others.
The Osaka terminal, launched in 1992, is a logistic hub for the Hanshin region in Japan and is equipped with up-to-date large container facilities. It boasts several 350 meter long berths, 104,152 square meter of terminal space, and 13 meter deep draft, accommodating up to Post-Panamax size container vessels. Two Super Gantry Cranes handle over 40 containers per hour.
The container yard holds 5,500 TEU containers has 378 refer container plugs, and automation management systems for containers and container chasis.
In addition, a worldwide on-line network provides shippers with exact and swift information on inbound and outbound vessels and cargo arrivals. When the terminal first started in 1992, it treated 75,000 TEU of cargoes and has since doubled to 160,000 TEU last year, consolidating its position as the largest container terminal in the Osaka region. As their 10-year lease expires this year, Hanjin recontracted with the City of Osaka for another 10 years until 2012.
Despite the destruction of the nearby Kobe Port and declining operations at the Osaka terminal due to a severe earthquake on 17th February 1995, the Hanjin terminal was relatively undamaged and continued normally, helping to handle Sealand cargoes.
