Busan Port handled 1,531,301 TEU in August, increasing 5.5% year-on-year.
According to Busan Port Authority (President Lim Ki-tack) on the 23rd, Busan Port handled 751,097 TEU of import/export cargo and 779,935 TEU of transshipment cargo, increasing 2.3% and 8.7% respectively compared to the previous year.
The transshipment cargo volume, which accounts for half of the total cargo volume at Busan Port, in China (239,071 TEU), U.S.A. (98,805 TEU), Europe (46,789 TEU), and Russia (25,121 TEU) increased 12.5%, 4.0%, 48.3%, 2.9% respectively, while that of Japan (107,702 TEU) decreased 5.7%.
The ratio of transshipment cargo by nation is as follows: China 30.7%, Japan 13.8%, U.S.A. 12.7%, Europe 6.0%, and they accounted for 63.2% of total transshipment cargo volume.
The cumulative total in August 2014 at Busan Port was recorded at 12,193,020 TEU and the cargo handling ratio between New Port and North Port was 65 to 35 from 62 to 38 last year. Cargo volume to Busan New Port has gradually risen. Busan North Port handled 527,339 TEU in August, decreasing 5.2% YOY, while New Port processed 1.37 million TEU, increasing 12.1%.
For the first time, the monthly throughput at the port maintained a 1.5 million TEU level for five consecutive months since the monthly volume surpassed 1.6 million in March.
BPA Port Operation Director Park Chung-sik said, "We will make concerted efforts to attract high value added transshipment cargo and will also play a role as an import/export gateway. Furthermore, we will pay close attention to the rapid growth of Chinese ports, and global alliances, including 2M and 2CU, while strengthening our status as the largest transshipment hub port in Northeast Asia."
