According to Busan Port Authority on July 25th, Busan Port handled a total of 9.115 million TEU in the first half of 2014, increasing 3.5% year on year.
The import/export cargo and transshipment cargo accounted for 4.51 million TEU (up 0.8%) and 4.6 million TEU (up 6.4%), respectively, compared to the previous year.
In particular, the transhipment cargo accounts for 50.5% of the Busan Port, and the port has established its foothold as the transhipment hub port in Northeast Asia.
The influx of cargo volume to Busan New Port has been accelerating. The cargo handling ratio of Busan New Port and North Port was 61 to 38 last year, but the gap has widened to 65 to 35 as of the end of June. New Port handled 5.923 million TEU in the first half increasing 9.9%, while North Port processed 3.192 million TEU decreasing 6.7% from last year.
Busan Port Authority President stated "We will do our best to create high added value cargo at Busan Port through carrying out active marketing strategies to attract investment in the New Port distripark, maintaining cooperation with Japanese and Chinese ports, and holding the status of the largest transshipment hub port in Northeast Asia."
