Hyundai Mipo Dockyard christens 100th vessel
The Hyundai Mipo Dockyard has finished its 100th vessel since it started building ships in 1996.
One insider from HMD said, "We held the naming ceremony for a 35,000 DWT class PC ship ordered by Schoeller Holdings Ltd. in August, 2001, and delivered the ship January 15." Schoeller Holdings named the ship the 'Cape Bruny'. It is 176 meters long, 31 meters wide, 17 meters high and cruises at 15 knots.
HMD started as a shipbuilding company specializing in vessel repairs at first, then constructed a shipbuilding yard for business diversification in Vietnam. The company entered the shipbuilding business centered around middle-sized PC ships from 1996. HMD's first ship, the 'Ranfoam Banff' was christened in 1997. HMD delivered 20 ships in 2001, 30 ships in 2002 and delivered 32 ships in 2003. This year it aims to deliver 35.
Amongst the ships HMD has built are 66 middle-sized PC ships, 8 container ships, 10 bulk carriers, and 5 cable-laying ships.
Meanwhile, the company stands unchallenged as the world's foremost middle-sized PC ship builder, and is strengthening its position with its unique brand, the 'Mipo Tanker'. It plans to expand in the world market by becoming even more competitive.
