Foreign vessels break off with Pusan
Two shipping companies, including Zim line, moved their calling ports to Qingdao from Pusan. This is the first calling port change after typhoon Maemi hit the Korean peninsula and caused huge losses for the container terminals. The country is seriously concerned about what following port changes may happen.
According to Pusan Regional Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Oct. 10, Zim, the Israeli shipping company, and Lloyd Triestino, having co-operated on the Asia USA Express Service (AUX), decided to stop calling at Pusan port, shifting instead to Qingdao, China starting from October 24th. The shipping companies said that they couldn?t find any place to call at in Pusan in the wake of the paralyzed Shingamman terminal. The service deployed 9 vessels, 5 vessels from Zim and 4 from Lloyd. The government said that they will lose 30,000 to 40,000 TEUs of cargoes annually by this port change.
This port change was attributed to dramatic cargo increases in China and a 10% higher rates income in China. In addition, the recognition that Pusan is no longer a stable port is assumed to be one of the reasons the shipping companies changed.
