Hamburg Sud deploy new 5,900 TEU container ship in Asia - S. America route
The Rio de Janeiro?was christened at the Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. Ltd. (DSME) yard in Okpo, Korea on June 10.
After the Rio de la Plata she is the second newbuilding in a series of six identical vessels, each with a slot capacity of 5,900 TEU. This makes the ?io?class ships the largest container vessels in the history of Hamburg Sud.
The Rio de Janeiro? sponsor is Teresa Oetker, daughter of Dr. H. C. August Oetker, partner of Dr. August Oetker KG and Chairman of the Advisory Board of Hamburg Sud.
Following her delivery on June 12, 2008, the Rio de Janeiro will be initially phased into Hamburg Sud Asia - South America East Coast Service before being deployed on the shipping group? Europe - South America East Coast route this autumn.
The ?io?class ships will gradually replace the ?onte?vessels that will then be deployed in the Asia and South America East Coast trades.<Korea Shipping Gazette>
