Gwangyang 2-2 terminal 6 months behind schedule
With transferring gantry cranes to Pusan, Gwangyang 2-2 container terminal will be half a year behind its original schedule.
Yosu Regional Maritime Affairs and Fisheries and the Korea Container Terminal Authority disclosed Oct. 18 that Gwangyang 2-2 container terminal, with four berths scheduled to be completed by the end of this year, will be 6 months behind schedule due to crane transfers to Pusan and construction postponements until June next year.
As one gantry crane has been transferred to Pusan already and the other two gantry cranes are also scheduled to move, Gwangyang will likely see all construction completed by next June.
The local government, however, plans to partially run the terminal from next year after finishing other terminal facilities construction by the end of this year.
An insider from the local MOMAF said, ?e will operate 2-2 terminal with 3 out of 6 gantry cranes already set. There will be little inconvenience with stevedoring unless more than two vessels are deployed at the same time.?Starting its construction in 1995 with 22.73 billion won, this 2-2 terminal is capable of handling 814,000 TEUs annually and accommodating two 50,000-ton vessels and two 20,000-ton vessels at the same time.
