The Port of Pusan operates advanced container scanner
The Port of Pusan began operation of a container scanner that can examine the inside of containers by fluoroscopy after a commemorative ceremony with Lee Yong Seob, chief of the office of Customs Administration on November 14.
The scanner, which was installed at the 7th wharf of Pusan Port, can X-ray containers on trucks. This equipment will help the US, Japan and other nations to discover goods bound for terrorist purposes as well as many smuggled goods.
For Korea, customs agents have overwhelmed by container inspections because it takes them 3~4 hours to inspect each container and even then, they have only been able to examine about 1.5% of imported cargoes.
But with the new the scanner customs agents can examine 5~10% of import cargoes at a fantastic rate of 10 minutes per container. The new system is being heralded as one of the most effective tools prevent smuggled farm, marine products as well as arms and goods for terrorism.
The scanner already proved its worth when on October 22 it uncovered a container filled with smuggled goods disguised as marine products.
The office of Customs Administration will install additional scanners at each wharf, Jaseongdae and Sinseondae in Pusan Port, by the end this year.
