Pusan Newport to install advanced stevedoring system
A new state-of-the-art stevedoring system will allow Pusan Newport to accommodate 12,000 TEU class container ships, improving stevedoring productivity there by 40% more than originally planned.
MOMAF (Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries) announced that it would approve the Pusan Newport Company's plan in February. As 1st step, the Pusan Newport Company submitted a change of construction plans in order to get the new high-tech stevedoring system last December.
This stevedoring system combines CSX World Terminal's artificial terminal management system with quay cranes and yard cranes. It is the first twin-lift system in Korea, and can manage 35 containers per hour. By using both manned and unmanned systems, yard cranes will work all through the day, making port service faster.
49 yard cranes will be provided by DHIC (Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction) and 18 quay cranes by a Chinese company, ZPMC. Under the 220 billion won contract, these 67 cranes will be completed by November 2006. The January 2006 opening should easily go as scheduled. Now, the 1-1 step construction progress is at 65%.
