Container cargoes increases in Le Havre in 2001
In 2001 the overall traffic of the Port of Le Havre attained 69.5 million tonnes against 68 million tonnes for 2000 (+2.2%), which provides a good result in respect of an already satisfying year.
Liquid petroleum products increased by 5.2% (45 million tonnes against 42.7 million) whilst other bulk cargo fell by 21.3% (6 million tonnes against 7.6 million), this was due to a drop in imports of coal for the EDF (France Electricity).
General cargo reached a new record with 18 million tonnes against 17.1 million tonnes in 2000, an increase of 5.2%. The main reason for satisfaction naturally concerns the container traffic which was 14.6 million tonnes against 13.8 million in 2000 thus showing an increase of 5.7%.
Around 1,525,000 TEU containers transited via Le Havre in 2001 with an important increase of international transhipments which represent 25.9% of the overall against 20.6% in 2000.
Le Havre entered the exclusive club of European ports with over 1 million TEUs per annum.and since then has never ceased to record constant and regular increase in its traffics.
Excellent results were also obtained for the RoRo traffic (nearly 600?000 vehicles) which confirms the growing role of the port of Le Havre as a European car shipping centre.
