Savannah Named U.S. South Atlantic Hub for Evergreen’s New North Amer
ica/East Coast South america Service
Evergreen has selected the Port of Savannah as its primary U.S. South
Atlantic hub for the global carrier’s new weekly, fixed-day container
service linking North America to the East Coast of South America. The
service will also carry Asian and European trade to and from South Am
erica through a transshipment port at Evergreen’s new Coco Solo Termi
nal in Colon, Panama.
Evergreen’s new service will deploy seven 1,100 TEU capacity vessels
on a 49 day rotation in the trade. Evergreen’s first vessel in the ro
tation, Ever Able, is scheduled to arrive at the Georgia Ports Authori
ty Garden City Terminal in Savannah in mid-May.
Evergreen officials indicate that Savannah’s productive facilities ar
e well equipped to handle their large volumes of northbound and southb
ound cargoes. “We have been looking at Savannah since the Med service
called there and because of the many companies that support Savannah
and request this service,” stated Evergreen America Corp. President O
wen Wu. “The Port of Savannah endeavored to meet our specifications a
nd to forge a professional partnership.”
Evergreen’s new North/South Service will connect in South America to
the carrier’s ESA service, which commenced in March 1994, to the Far
East via South Africa around the Cape of Good hope. Evergreen has esta
blished a corporate administrative office in Sao Paulo, Brazil and wil
l network with a series of agents throughout South America to service
the need of its customers.
“The Georgia Port Authority is very pleased to welcome Evergreen Mari
ne Corp. back to the Port of Savannah via the inauguration of it’s ne
w North America/South America Service,” stated GPA Executive Director
Doug J. Marchand. “We feel Evergreen’s selection of Savannah, in ad
dition to recent new service announcements by other carriers, is refle
ctive of our ability to provide port users with the most productive fa
cilities in the U.S. South Atlantic. We are committed to aggressively
pursuing and increasing business opportunities between North America a
nd South America via our deepwater terminals in Georgia.”
In addition to Savannah as its primary U.S. South Atlantic hub, the ne
w service calls the North American ports of Port Elizabeth in New York
/New Jersey;Baltimore, MD and Miami, FL as well as Colon, Panama. Port
s of call in South America include Puerto Cabello, Venezuela;the Brazi
lian ports of Rio de Janeiro, Santos, Rio Grande and Sao Francisco;Bue
nos Aires, Argentina;and Montevideo, Uruguay.
The addition of Evergreen North America/South America service further
strengthens containerized service at the Port of Savannah to the fast
growing markets of South America. Sixteen of the port’s 45-plus carri
ers provide regularly scheduled container, reefer and general cargo se
rvices between Savannah and South america’s East Coast. During Calend
ar Year 1997, a total of 1,048,414 metric tons of cargo moved between
Savannah and South America.
