Port workers hang together through crisis in Pusan
The Port of Pusan, severely damaged by typhoon Maemi, has been handling cargoes 24 hours a day with voluntary cooperation from port workers. Pusan suffered from 11 overturned and derailed cranes.
Pusan Regional Maritime Affairs and Fisheries revealed that container terminals from Sept. 14 to Sept. 18 handled 30.7% more cargoes per berth over the daily average cargoes in August, indicating operating conditions are normal in Pusan.
Especially, Gamcheon Hanjin Terminal marked an eye-popping growth of 98.4% the period and Gamman Hutchison terminal showed a 76.1% increase. Jasungdae Hutchison terminal, where one gantry cranes fell, also saw 63.7% growth with the full operation of three berths.
Growth for the terminals was attributed to cargoes stockpiled from the Chusok holiday and cargoes diverted to other terminals from ShinGamman terminal, which suffered typhoon damage.
An official from Pusan MOMAF said, ?usan port workers have cooperated with terminal operation companies, increasing availability to 24 hours a day. This is one of the reasons container terminals are enjoying cargo growth. Pusan may handle 10 million TEU this year if the government, terminal operation company, and port workers unite together.?
One harbor crane is scheduled to be added to the ShinGamman terminal during over the course of the this week. After finishing piled up cargoes from the Chusok holidays and those delayed by the typhoon, Pusan expects return to normal, guaranteeing stable berths.
In the mean time, although Evergreen used to call at ShinGamman terminal, it revealed that it wouldn? change its schedule from calling at Pusan, securing berths from Shinsundae and other terminals.
