472 million dollar loss from export cargo transport and loading failures
The total losses from the trucker? strike increased to 472 million dollars as export cargoes were not carried or loaded for six days beginning August 21st.
Even though truck drivers were starting to join transportation and in/out cargoes were increasing from Pusan and Gwangyang ports, some main exports such as electronics suffered severely.
The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy (MOCIE) reported August 27th that 51 million dollars were lost on August 26th, close to 480 million dollars loss for the past 6 day? strike. Even though the figure was lower compared to 81 million dollars in losses on August 25th, some sectors such as electronic products and tires would be severely damaged if the strike plays out until the weekend.
370 TEU of electronics in Kwangju and Gumi couldn? be loaded, recording 48 million dollars in losses up to August 26th.
Tires estimated 6 million dollars in loss with 50 TEUs of failed transportation and loading. 87,400 tons of steel also couldn? get out of 12 factories, losing 42.13 billion won. 10% of export textiles, valued at 6 million dollars, suffered from transportation as well, and lack of transport for instruments caused an estimated 1.8 million dollars in losses.
A MOCIE official said, ?s cement car-carriers and container truck drivers came back to their jobs, we expect the losses would be reduced from August 27th. However, we are still worried about trading companies?losses due to a sustained lack of containers.
