Transit cargoes have to move without trouble…
In the midst of missing export cargoes on board and being full of cargoes in the on-dock container yard in Pusan following the Trucker? Federation strikes, shipping companies in the Port of Pusan struggled to move transit cargoes through Pusan without failures.
Pusan attributed its status as third largest container port in the world to transit cargoes to and from China. They are responsible for 41% of all cargoes. However, as overseas shipping companies have been moving their hub ports from Pusan to neighboring ports after the first Trucker? Federation strike in May, and transit cargoes decreased from China, Pusan slipped to fifth, behind Shanghai and Shenzen in July volumes.
Transit cargos usually move between neighboring terminals or other carriers without inland transportation, boasting comparatively high value. Terminal operating companies and shipping companies actively pursue transit cargo business.
If transit cargoes aren? taken care of properly, Pusan may lose its last hope and gain itself a reputation as an unstable port.
At present, trucks to carry containers in Pusan counted up 900 units, 40% of usual. Trucking companies had 440 units, nearly half for transit cargo transportation. Long distance trucks only reached 30% of usual, while transit cargoes carriers remained at 59% of normal levels.
An insider from one trucking company said, ?e will carry transit cargoes without trouble even though we?e giving up import-export cargoes.?Transit cargoes usually come from overseas companies. If there are any troubles, it damages the international reputation as well as incurring port changes to China or Japan by shippers, in worst case scenarios.
Shipping companies, as well, have to endure financial losses if loading failures happen and slots are empty. In these situations, shipping companies may consider stopping calling at Pusan.
Terminal operating companies also tried to attract transit cargoes as well.
With a shortage of trucks, yard trailers usually operating within the terminal have carried transit cargoes between terminals during the strike.
The government also deployed 15 army vehicles in the terminal to carry transit cargoes and prepared a temporary container yard nearby the terminal to secure transit cargoes.
However, as trailer drivers become tired with massive overtime work and trucks decreased with the Trucker? Federation strike, some terminal operating companies worry about bankruptcy.
