Minister Hur signs IMO Korea Fund MOU
Huh Sung Kwan, the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, signed an MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) for donating 40 thousand dollars to the Korea Fund under the auspices of the IMO (International Maritime Organization) on June 2.
According to the Korean Embassy in the UK, the IMO Korea Fund will be used to support maritime safety technology transfers to developing countries.
One concerned party commented that the donation is to increase Korea's influence on maritime safety and environmental protection since it became an IMO member.
Korean officials stated that as Korea is the 8th largest maritime country in terms of shipbuilding, ports, and maritime safety, in the past its contributions to the international community have been insufficient.
Minister Hur invited IMO official from English shipping and port organizations for 2 days of discussions before he conferred with officials on June 4 at the Port of Rotterdam in Holland about cooperation plans between the two countries.
