Gwangyang container volumes down in August
Container traffic through the Port of Gwangyang during Augustwas down in the rough wake of the truckers’ strike.
Gwangyang City reported cargo volume in August dropped to 91,517 TEU, or 6.6% less than the previous month.
Korea Express Terminal handles the largest volumes in Gwaungyang but was never-the-less hammered with a 33.5% decrease to 26,451 TEU. Dongbu Corporation also shrank by 11% to 7,002 TEU. While Hutchison Terminal, Hanjin Shipping Terminal and Global Enterprise all suffered decreased volumes, only KIT enjoyed a high increase in volumes, up 35.5% to 8,588 TEU.
Vessel callings at each terminal showed that Korea Express handled 8 vessels a week, Hanjin Shipping 16 callings a week, Dongbu Corporation 10 vessels a week, Hutchison 6 a week, Global Enterprises 12 per week and KIT 3 every week.
The total volume for Gwangyang from 1998 to August 2003 amounts to 3.85 million TEUs.
