Pyoungtaek Port to Be Run as Car Export Hub
Pyoungtaek Port held a ceremony on July 20th for the completion of a
new berth for car carriers, which cost a total of 11.7 billion won and
took 7 months to finish since its inception last November.
Hanggyu Lee, Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Sokjae Ham, a
United Liberal Democrats (ULD) assemblyman, Congressman Yoochul Won,
Changyol Im, Governor of Kyunggi Province, and Sunki Kim, Mayor of Pyo
ungtaek attended the ceremony.
Minister Lee proclaimed through his congratulatory address that govern
ment will try to stimulate interest in the Pyoungtaek port because it
is new and not well known, and that they will run the Pyoungtaek port
as the gateway to metropolitan areas and the interior of Korea. By usi
ng Pyoungtaek, 7 billion won in logistical pay will be saved annually,
and the transportation time will be shortened compared with the time
that it takes cars produced by Kia Motors in Hwasung and Hyundai Motor
s in Asan to be transported through Inchon, Kunsan, and Ulsan. This en
deavor is helping Pyoungtaek to consolidate and strengthen its place i
n the market, both domestically and from outside. They anticipate carr
ying 400 thousands cars annually.
