In recent times, especially under the influence of Christianity, the s
nake has come to be known as malign and misunderstood. Though reviled
by many today, it has been revered in earlier times. For example, as
a symbol of transformation and healing, Native Americans respected the
snake. To them, the serpent embodies wisdom and goes through a serie
s of rebirths in the process of shedding its skin in cycles. It was o
nly recent that I learned of these meanings through a friend who corre
cted my own misconceptions toward what symbolized the snake.
With this newly acquired insight in thought then, I would like to loo
k upon the year 2001 as a fresh start, as a point of transition toward
s further self-growth. In our busy everyday lives we often forget to
stop and pace ourselves; we are conditioned to walk forward and never
to lose a step in fear of falling behind whichever real or imagined co
mpetitors we have created for ourselves. In the upcoming year I hope
not to live life in the daily grind going through repetitive motions b
ut rather to live fuller and in search of more insight.
